So my 14 year old is obsessed with surf photography…
Last weekend I brought my son and his friends to swim and shoot with the Go Pro Nation of young photographers that are in the water every Saturday. Saxon was in the water shooting. I covered the beach. While I set out to capture the morning light on the face of the wave, I was truly shocked when I processed this image! I wasn’t expecting the depth of what developed.
Introducing Sapphire ….
What surprised me most when I first saw this shot was that the face almost seems like it’s composed of glass and metal. The spray – a feather halo.
The electric-turquoise color at the top of the lip is set in the most regal color of sapphire. (You have to see the print in the light!)
… but the part I love most about this photo, is the cut seaweed being drawn into the face.
These organic clusters add to the complexity of the composition.
I hope you enjoy this shot as much as I did making it!
Stop by and see it for yourself! In galleries today or order online here.
I’d love to know your thoughts…

Good morning. I’m Aaron Chang and today we’re at Marine Street in La Jolla. We’re here because my young son has taken to surf photography and this is one of the best shore breaks in San Diego so when I wake up, the first thing I hear is “Marine Street, Marine Street.” Here we are today, as you can see the GoPro nation is in the water shooting the shore break and what I’m going to do is try and capture the light bouncing off the face of the waves. There’s a really pretty situation here with crystal clear water, a little bit of seaweed in the surf but the waves just pitch here and it should be a really pretty abstract photo. I’m going for a blue green theme and trying to get something that sits in the fence between perfect reality, perfect sharp and blurred abstract. Let’s see if we can get it.
